How to Choose the Right Concealer for Your Skin Tone

How to Choose the Right Concealer for Your Skin Tone

Concealer is one of those products can make or break a routine. Too light, and it leaves a chalky, ghostly cast under your eyes. Too dark, and it turns muddy against your skin. Get it right, though, and it does exactly what it's supposed to: disappear, while everything you wanted hidden dark circles, redness, a stray blemish quietly fades into the background.

Here's how to actually find your match, starting with the two things that matter most: undertone and formula.

Start With Undertone, Not Just Shade

Skin tone tells you how light or deep your complexion is. Undertone tells you the color running underneath it and it's the undertone, not the tone, that makes a concealer look seamless or slightly "off."

There are three main undertone families:

  • Cool — skin has pink, red, or bluish hints. Veins on your wrist tend to look blue or purple. Silver jewelry often flatters more than gold.
  • Warm — skin leans yellow, golden, or peachy. Veins look more green than blue. Gold jewelry tends to be the flattering choice.
  • Neutral — a balanced mix of both, with veins that are hard to place as clearly blue or green.

A simple way to check: look at the inner side of your wrist in natural daylight. It's not a perfect science, but it's a reliable starting point.

Undertone matters most in two places:

  1. Under the eyes, where circles often carry blue, purple, or grey tones. A concealer with a touch of peach or warmth can neutralize that instead of just layering more color on top.
  2. On blemishes or redness, where a cool-toned or green-tinted corrector can calm things down before your regular concealer goes on.

If your concealer matches your undertone but not quite your depth, it will still blend far better than one that matches depth but fights your undertone. We have the undertones listed for our concealers.

The Formula

Most concealers fall somewhere on a spectrum: full-coverage matte formulas that sit on top of the skin to blot out blemishes, versus hydrating formulas built to melt in and actually improve the skin underneath. We built our Zero Waste Concealer to sit at that second end of the spectrum; buildable, medium-to-full coverage that still feels like skincare.

A few of the ingredients doing the work:

  • Jojoba oil closely mimics skin's natural sebum, so it hydrates and helps balance the skin rather than sitting on top of it.
  • Camellia seed oil brings soothing, anti-inflammatory properties important for a formula that's meant to go on the delicate under-eye area.
  • Apricot kernel oil and shea butter condition and soften skin while helping the concealer glide on and blend seamlessly instead of dragging or settling into fine lines.
  • Arrowroot powder and rice starch give the formula its silky, crease-resistant finish without relying on talc or synthetic fillers.
  • Vitamin E helps protect and support skin over time, so the area you're concealing today is a little better off tomorrow, not just masked.

It's also one of the few organic concealers made without titanium dioxide, and it skips parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrance across the board. The color itself comes from natural mineral pigments like iron oxides, which is part of why it comes in five buildable shades that read as true skin rather than a flat, one-note tint.

The result is a formula built to work with skin, not against it: enough coverage for dark circles, redness, and everyday blemishes, in a texture gentle enough for sensitive skin housed in a plastic-free, home-compostable paper jar.
